The refill that fits your label maker is set by the format family on the old cassette, not by the brand on the printer's case; for thermal rolls, the thermal label size and compatibility guide settles most of it before you open a product page. A Brother TZe cassette drops into any P-touch whose spec page lists TZe, while the near-identical M-K231 number belongs to a different system that no TZe machine accepts.

Width is the second filter, and it is a hardware limit rather than a suggestion. A PT-D220 that tops out at 12 mm will not take an 18 mm or 24 mm cassette in any family, and a LabelManager 160 stops at 1/2 inch while the 500TS takes a full inch. Buyers who check the number on the old cassette but skip the machine's maximum width are the ones who end up returning a four-pack.

Cassette families and roll families also behave differently. Brother TZe, DYMO D1, LetraTag and Rhino are cassette systems, and laminated tapes such as TZe seal the print under film, which is why they survive wiping and abrasion. Phomemo, NIIMBOT and 4x6 shipping stock are bare heat-sensitive paper, and two of those roll families now authenticate what you load.

How Refill Compatibility Works

Two facts decide every purchase: which format family the machine reads, and how wide its media path is.

Family comes first because it is a physical system, not a preference. Brother TZe cassettes carry their own ribbon and a laminated face; M tapes are non-laminated and built for a different line of machines; DYMO D1, Rhino IND and LetraTag are three separate cassette geometries that never cross over. A compatible listing that names the right family in its title is worth more than one that names only the printer brand.

Width comes second and is the more common mistake. Manufacturers publish a tape width range per model, and the widest cassette the machine accepts is a hard ceiling. If you already own a 12 mm machine, buying 18 mm tape for a better colour selection will not work.

Decoding a Brother TZe part number

A TZe code reads left to right as background, width, text colour. The letter prefix in front tells you the tape type.

Position Meaning
Prefix S strong adhesive, FX flexible ID, AF acid-free, SE security, R satin ribbon, FA fabric
1st digit Background: 1 clear, 2 white, 3 black, 4 red, 5 blue, 6 yellow
2nd digit Width: 1 = 6 mm, 2 = 9 mm, 3 = 12 mm, 4 = 18 mm, 5 = 24 mm, 6 = 36 mm
3rd digit Text: 1 black, 2 red, 3 blue, 4 gold, 5 white
Tape Background Width Text
TZe-231 White 12 mm Black
TZe-131 Clear 12 mm Black
TZe-241 White 18 mm Black
TZe-251 White 24 mm Black
TZe-631 Yellow 12 mm Black
TZe-621 Yellow 9 mm Black
TZe-S231 White 12 mm Black, strong adhesive
TZe-FX231 White 12 mm Black, flexible ID
TZe-FX661 Yellow 36 mm Black, flexible ID

Once the width digit is on your radar, an 18 mm tape is no longer a hidden trap. Anything with a 4, 5 or 6 in the middle position needs a machine that takes more than 12 mm.

Brother P-touch: TZe, M, HSe and HGe

Brother runs at least four consumable families, and only one of them is the default.

TZe standard laminated

The reference tape is the 12 mm, 8 m TZe-231: Check the Brother TZe-231 on Amazon. Brother states it is suited to frequent water exposure, sanitising with cleaners and wipes, sunlight and abrasion, because the print sits between laminate layers. The same code in other colours follows the decoder above: Check the Brother TZe-131 on Amazon for black on clear, Check the Brother TZe-631 on Amazon for black on yellow.

Buying the wrong length is a quieter error than buying the wrong width. Brother sells an economy version of the same tape, TZE231S, at 4 m instead of 8 m. The code looks almost identical on a listing thumbnail, so a per-metre comparison against a full-length cassette is meaningless unless both are 8 m.

For wider machines, 18 mm and 24 mm standard laminated tape is the TZe-241 and the TZe-251: Check the Brother TZe-241 on Amazon · Check the Brother TZe-251 on Amazon. Neither fits a 12 mm P-touch.

Which Brother machine takes which width

Machine Maximum tape width Tape families listed by Brother
PT-D210 (discontinued) 12 mm TZe
PT-D220 12 mm TZe
PT-H110 12 mm TZe
PT-1280 12 mm TZe
PT-E110 12 mm HGe, TZe
PT-D610BT 24 mm TZe (media line also names HGe)
PT-P710BT 24 mm TZe
PT-P900W 36 mm HGe, TZe, HSe

The PT-D610BT row deserves a note, because Brother's own page contradicts itself: the media compatibility line lists HGe and TZe, while the compatible tape families line lists only TZe. If you are buying high-grade tape for that model, confirm with the seller or with Brother support rather than trusting either line alone.

The PT-P710BT is a second case where a specification line misleads. Its feature block mentions 36 mm, but the specification block gives 24 mm as the maximum label width. Treat 24 mm as the ceiling.

TZe specialty tapes: strong adhesive and flexible ID

Two speciality codes cover most non-standard jobs.

The TZe-S231 is the strong-adhesive version: Check the Brother TZe-S231 on Amazon. Brother describes it as twice the adhesive strength of regular TZe tape and aimed at slippery painted metal and textured, uneven surfaces. The TZe-FX231 is flexible ID tape, designed for wrapping cables, cords, wires, bottles and PVC pipe, with seven-layer lamination and no stated minimum diameter: Check the Brother TZe-FX231 on Amazon.

Flexible ID is the one place where the third-party route is most visibly weaker. Compatible FX tape sells in volume and the recurring complaint is lifting on curves, so if you are labelling cable bundles that get handled, the genuine cassette is the cheaper decision over a year.

Brother's catalogue also lists acid-free laminated and satin ribbon types, and the PT-D210 and PT-D220 accept iron-on fabric tape. Not every machine takes every type, though. The PT-E110 lists only flexible ID, extra-strength adhesive and standard adhesive, which is a reminder that tape types are gated per model just as widths are.

M tape: legacy, non-laminated, easily confused

M tape is 12 mm and non-laminated, recommended for home and indoor use. The genuine M-231 two-pack fits the PT-65, PT-70, PT-80, PT-85, PT-90 and PT-M95: Check the Brother M-231 two-pack on Amazon. It does not fit any TZe machine, and TZe tape does not fit those machines either.

The confusion is built into the numbering. M-K231 and TZe-231 share the digits 231, and compatible M-tape sellers write "not for PT-D210, PT-D220, PT-N20" directly into their listing titles as a result. Check the letters on the cassette cover: TZ or TZe for one system, M for the other.

HSe heat-shrink and HGe high-grade

HSe is heat-shrink tubing rather than an adhesive label, and it is the family where seller claims and manufacturer specifications disagree most often. The genuine HSe-231 is a 2:1 shrink at 11.7 mm, black on white: Check the Brother HSe-231 heat-shrink tubing on Amazon. A compatible three-pack covers the same slot: Check the HSe-231 three-pack on Amazon.

The 2:1 series runs 5.8, 8.8, 11.7, 17.7 and 23.6 mm; a 3:1 series runs 5.2, 9.0, 11.2, 21.0 and 31.0 mm. Support is concentrated in the network and industrial models: the PT-E550W, PT-P750W, PT-P900, PT-P900W and PT-P950NW, with the 31 mm 3:1 size excluded from some of those. The PT-P910BT is not supported.

Several compatible HSe listings name the PT-D210, PT-H110 or PT-D220 in their compatibility lists. Brother's specification pages for those machines list no heat-shrink media at all, so that claim does not hold.

HGe sits at the other end. It is a high-grade laminated tape that Brother lists for the PT-18RKT, PT-9200PC, PT-9500PC, PT-9700PC, PT-9800PCN, PT-E100, PT-E110, PT-E300, PT-E500, PT-E550W, PT-E800W, PT-P750WVP, PT-P900, PT-P900W and PT-P950NW, sold as a 12 mm, 8 m five-pack. Brother's listings for the consumer PT-D handhelds are inconsistent (see the PT-D610BT note above), so check the exact model page. The common claim that HGe never fits a P-touch machine is wrong, and so is the claim that it fits any P-touch.

DYMO: Four Tape Systems That Never Cross Over

"DYMO tape" describes four incompatible products. The DYMO brand and lineup guide covers the machines; the refill rules are these.

D1 for LabelManager and the LabelWriter Duo

D1 rolls run 7 m, longer than any LetraTag cassette, and come in 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch widths. The cassette housing is made with at least 80 percent recycled material.

Width access is model-gated, and the gaps are wide:

Width LabelManager models that accept it
1/4 in (6 mm), 3/8 in (9 mm), 1/2 in (12 mm) 160, 210D+, 280, PnP, ColorPop
3/4 in (19 mm) 360D and 420P, which also take the narrower widths
1 in (24 mm) 500TS

The everyday code is 45013, 1/2 inch black on white: Check the DYMO D1 45013 on Amazon. Compatibility families inside D1 are Permanent Polyester, Flexible Nylon and Durable, on top of Standard. For 19 mm work, the reference is the 45803: Check the DYMO D1 45803 on Amazon.

The LabelManager 280 prompts you to set the label width each time you insert a cassette, which is a useful habit on any D1 machine: the printer does not always infer it.

Rhino IND: industrial media, higher stakes

The Rhino 4200, 5200 and 6000+ take IND cassettes only. The ranges are Permanent Vinyl and Permanent Polyester at 18 ft, Flexible Nylon at 11.5 ft and Heat-Shrink Tube at 5 ft, spanning 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch. The 1 inch size appears on the 6000+ alone, as does self-laminating 1 inch tape.

The reference cassette is the 1/2 inch black-on-white vinyl 18444: Check the DYMO Rhino 18444 vinyl on Amazon. Compatible equivalents exist and cost less, but this is the weakest category for the third-party route: buyers report light, illegible text and backing that is hard to peel. On permanent industrial vinyl applied to cable and panel work, the savings rarely survive a failed install.

No IND cassette appears on any LabelManager row of DYMO's compatibility chart, and the Rhino M1011 is an embosser using stainless and aluminium tape. The XTL 300 and XTL 500 take their own chip-equipped XTL cartridges.

LetraTag LT: one width, one length

LetraTag tape is 12 mm and 4 m, full stop. The cassette is tear-resistant and wipeable with split backing. US codes are 10697 for paper white, 16952 for plastic clear, 91331 for plastic white, with colour, metallic and fabric iron-on variants alongside. The 3-pack 12331 is the common bundle.

The 16952 is the clear plastic roll: Check the DYMO LetraTag 16952 clear on Amazon. Machines are the LetraTag 100H, 100H+, 100T and 100T+, plus the 200B, which DYMO specifies for 12 mm paper, clear, opaque plastic and textile tapes.

The refill economics are poor by design: 4 m per cassette against 7 m for a D1 roll and 8 m for a Brother TZe. If you are printing volume on a LetraTag, you are paying a length penalty on every cassette. A D1 machine is the cheaper platform for regular output.

LabelWriter rolls and the 4x6 format

LabelWriter printers use direct-thermal rolls, not cassettes. The 4x6 shipping format is the extra-large 1744907 roll, and it fits the 4XL and 5XL only: Check the DYMO 1744907 4x6 roll on Amazon. Narrow 30256 and 30323 rolls are marketed as shipping labels but are not 4x6 stock, and none of the narrow models will print a standard carrier label.

Phomemo and NIIMBOT: Roll Families and Cassettes

Phomemo sells at least four consumable formats under one brand, and NIIMBOT adds an authentication layer on top of its rolls.

Phomemo D30-family mini rolls

The D30, D35, Q30 and Q30S take paper widths of 6, 12, 14 and 15 mm. The common roll is the 12x40 mm sticker: Check the Phomemo D30 12x40 labels on Amazon. Phomemo's own page advises using Phomemo-branded thermal paper, which is a recommendation rather than a lock.

Compatible listings in this family are worth reading carefully. A 40x30 mm roll sold "for Phomemo D30" cannot fit, because D30 paper tops out at 15 mm.

Phomemo M-family business rolls

The M110 takes 20 to 50 mm rolls and the M220 and M221 take 20 to 75 mm. That difference is the whole compatibility question: a 70x80 mm roll belongs on an M220 or M221 and nowhere else. The everyday roll is the 40x30 mm: Check the Phomemo M110 40x30 labels on Amazon.

The M110 and M120 require the roll to sit on the right side of the feed, and the printers accept gap, black-mark or continuous stock. Transparent stock and unusual gap geometry are the usual causes of a detection failure.

Phomemo P12 cassettes

The P12, P12 Pro and F12 use 12 mm by 4 m cassettes, sold in five-packs. These are cassettes with their own ribbon rather than bare thermal paper, so they behave more like a Brother or DYMO cassette than like a D30 roll. Check the Phomemo P12 tape on Amazon

Do not assume the P15 or A30 takes the same cassette. Those use a 12 mm by 5 m tape, and cross-compatibility is not stated.

NIIMBOT RFID rolls

NIIMBOT's genuine rolls for the D11, D110 and D101 carry an RFID chip that the printer and app read to set the label size: Check the NIIMBOT D11/D110 12x40 rolls on Amazon. A roll without a recognised chip may trigger a warning or need manual setup.

This is the family where compatible supplies fail hardest. Buyers of third-party NIIMBOT rolls report the printer declaring the roll empty halfway through a pack, and an app update has already removed printing on non-NIIMBOT spools for at least one owner after a long period of normal use. If you run a D11 or D110 for product labelling, budget for genuine rolls.

Genuine vs Compatible Refills

The price gap is real and large. Compatible TZe and D1 cassettes typically cost a fraction of the genuine cassette, and most of the time they fit and print.

The failure profile is consistent enough to plan around:

  • Jamming is the most frequently reported problem on high-volume compatible TZe listings.
  • Light or patchy print and ribbon or ink residue appear on compatible D1 cassettes, with occasional reports of the ribbon coming out with the label.
  • Hard-to-peel backing recurs across both families.
  • Owners describe cheap cassette shells as feeling different and the adhesive as tackier than genuine tape.

Where compatible supplies hold up best: standard 12 mm TZe and D1 in everyday indoor use. Where they hold up worst: permanent industrial vinyl for Rhino machines, RFID-gated rolls from NIIMBOT and DYMO's 550 series, and flexible ID tape that has to stay wrapped around a cable.

On warranties, the honest framing is narrower than the folklore. US federal warranty law generally bars a manufacturer from voiding a warranty simply because you used a third-party supply. It does allow the manufacturer to exclude damage actually caused by that supply. Using compatible tape does not void your warranty by itself; damage the tape causes may not be covered.

The Labelife TZe-231 and Freshworld D1 45013 compatible six-packs are the representative volume options in the two families where the compatible route is safest: Check the Labelife TZe-231 compatible six-pack on Amazon · Check the Freshworld D1 45013 compatible six-pack on Amazon. On the Rhino side, compatibles such as the FlyLong 18444 are where the gap shows: Check the FlyLong 18444 compatible on Amazon.

The RFID Lock: Where Compatible Rolls Stop Working

Two formats authenticate their consumables, and a third leans on warnings.

DYMO's LabelWriter 550, 550 Turbo and 5XL read a tag in DYMO rolls. Digital-rights advocates flagged the design when the series launched, on the grounds that it forces buyers onto first-party paper. In practice, third-party 4x6 rolls are now sold with "not for 550 or 5XL" printed in their own titles, which tells you the market has accepted the constraint. BETCKEY's 1744907-compatible rolls work on a 4XL and will not run on a 5XL: Check the BETCKEY 1744907 compatible rolls on Amazon.

NIIMBOT's D-series is the second, and it is enforced in software as much as in hardware: buyer reports of compatible rolls failing mid-pack are the pattern to expect. Phomemo's PM-241-BT is the third case in a softer form. Phomemo warns against HUOJI thermal labels and does not recommend other brands for that printer, though Phomemo does not describe a chip lock.

DYMO's D1 and LetraTag cassettes have no such lock. DYMO's packaging urges buyers to use DYMO-branded labels, which is a recommendation on a printed box, not an electronic check.

Which Refill Should You Buy?

Work down this list rather than across brands.

  • Cassette machine, everyday indoor labels. Standard TZe or D1 in the right width. Compatible six-packs are a reasonable saving.
  • Cassette machine, cables or curved surfaces. TZe-FX flexible ID, genuine, and the right width for the machine.
  • Cassette machine, slippery or textured surfaces. TZe-S strong adhesive.
  • Industrial handheld. Rhino IND or Brother HGe, matched to the exact model list, genuine where the surface is permanent.
  • Narrow thermal roll machine. Phomemo D30-family, Phomemo M-family or NIIMBOT, sized to the printer's stated width range, with NIIMBOT kept genuine.
  • 4x6 shipping stock. Any open-media 4-inch printer takes generic fanfold such as the Rollo or MUNBYN 500-label stacks: Check the Rollo 500-label fanfold stack on Amazon · Check the MUNBYN 500-label fanfold stack on Amazon. A DYMO 5XL does not.
  • Bulk shipping on a 4x6 printer. See the thermal label printer roll sizes guide for core diameter and outer diameter limits before ordering a large pack.

If you are still choosing the hardware rather than the refill, the complete thermal label printer buying guide and the 4x6 inkjet label compatibility guide cover the adjacent decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why will a TZe-231 not fit my PT-M95?

The PT-M95 is an M-tape machine, and M tape is a separate non-laminated system. The digits 231 appear in both M-K231 and TZe-231, which is why the mix-up is common. Check the letters printed on the cassette cover rather than the number.

Q: Can I use HSe heat-shrink tubing in a PT-D210 or PT-H110?

No. Brother's specification pages for those models list no heat-shrink media. Compatible HSe listings that name them are listing a claim Brother does not support. Heat-shrink belongs on the network and industrial models, starting with the PT-E550W, PT-P750W, PT-P900W and PT-P950NW.

Q: Does using compatible tape void my label maker warranty?

Not by itself. US federal warranty law generally prohibits conditioning a warranty on the use of brand-name supplies, but it does allow a manufacturer to exclude damage caused by a third-party part. If compatible tape jams the feed or leaves residue, that specific repair may fall outside cover.

Q: Why did my third-party NIIMBOT roll stop printing?

Genuine NIIMBOT rolls carry an RFID chip the printer and app read to identify the label. A compatible roll without a recognised chip can be refused outright or fail partway through a pack. This is the single category where the compatible route is most likely to cost more than it saves.

Conclusion

The refill decision has two steps and neither is about brand loyalty. Identify the format family on the old cassette, then confirm the maximum width your machine accepts. Everything else, including the genuine-or-compatible call, is a smaller decision layered on top of those two.

Within cassette families, the cheap route is defensible for standard 12 mm tape in indoor use and increasingly weak as the job gets harder. Flexible ID, industrial vinyl and heat-shrink are where genuine tape earns its price, and the Rhino range shows the widest quality gap of any category covered here. Within roll families, the calculus flips: open-media 4x6 stock is a commodity, while NIIMBOT and DYMO 550-series rolls are gated by design.

For the adjacent reading, the DYMO shipping label printers guide covers which models take which format, the retail label printer guide handles shelf and price-tag workflows, and the Rollo shipping setup guide covers media handling on open-feed printers.
