Five of the seven LabelWriters top out at a 2.25-inch print width and cannot produce a standard 4×6 carrier label, no matter how the software is configured. Only the 4XL and 5XL clear that bar, and for anyone shipping standard parcels, they are the entire relevant shortlist.

Between those two, the decision is generational rather than technical. The 5XL is the current 4×6 model with wired Ethernet and automatic roll recognition, tied to Authentic DYMO LW Labels. The 4XL is discontinued but widely available used, prints the same size, and accepts compatible bulk media — the better fit when per-label cost matters most. For narrow-label work, the 550 and 550 Turbo are the current picks, with the 550 Turbo adding Ethernet and more throughput, and the LabelWriter Wireless remaining the only built-in Wi-Fi option in the family at the same narrow width.

If the priority is a current, carrier-friendly 4×6 workflow, the 5XL is the straightforward answer. If minimizing consumable spend on the same 4×6 output is the goal, the 4XL deserves a serious look before an industrial or open-media alternative is considered.
