The DYMO LabelWriter 4XL driver installs with DYMO's desktop software rather than as a standalone file: DYMO Connect for Desktop 1.6.2 on Windows 10 or newer and macOS 14 or newer, or legacy DYMO Label Software on Windows 7 and 8.1 (8.7.4) and macOS 10.14 through 13 (8.7.5). The same operating-system split carries across the rest of the current LabelWriter lineup, so once you know which branch your machine takes, the install itself is short.

What decides whether an install succeeds is the order of operations. The package places the driver on disk before Windows or macOS ever sees the hardware, which is why DYMO's instructions put the download and the install ahead of the USB cable. A 4XL that enumerates before any DYMO software exists is the most common source of an "Unspecified" device entry, and it is also the easiest state to recover from.

The hardware is a discontinued, USB-only, 300 dpi direct-thermal printer (item 1755120, 2010 generation), and DYMO still ships drivers for it, so a functioning unit needs no replacement. What follows is the download decision, both install sequences, the Windows manual driver-binding path, the Linux route, and the test that separates a driver fault from a scaled carrier-label PDF.

What You'll Need

  • A Windows or macOS computer with the exact OS version confirmed
  • Administrator rights on that computer
  • The 4XL's 24 V DC, 3.75 A power adapter
  • A standard USB Type-B printer cable
  • One roll of direct-thermal 4x6 labels for the test print
  • Access to DYMO's official download portal

Which DYMO Download Matches Your System

Operating system Software branch Installer
Windows 11, Windows 10 DYMO Connect for Desktop 1.6.2 DCDSetup1.6.2.9-X64.exe (x64)
Windows 8.1, Windows 7 DYMO Label Software 8.7.4 DLS8Setup8.7.4.exe
macOS 14 Sonoma, 15 Sequoia, 26 Tahoe DYMO Connect for Desktop 1.6.2 DCDMac1.6.2.6-Arm64.pkg (Apple Silicon) or the Intel package
macOS 10.14 Mojave through 13 Ventura DYMO Label Software 8.7.5 DLS8Setup.8.7.5.dmg
Linux CUPS with a community driver, or LPrint 1.4.0 No DYMO Connect desktop edition

Does the 4XL Need a Standalone Driver?

DYMO distributes the printer driver inside its desktop software and states that the LabelWriter driver is installed automatically when that software is installed. The current support page lists DYMO Connect and legacy Label Software as the 4XL's software options. There is no separate current consumer download card for a bare 4XL driver.

The driver files do exist on disk after installation, and DYMO points Windows users to those folders only when the operating system fails to bind the driver on its own. That folder path is a recovery route, not a download.

Third-party driver sites fill the gap with packages that predate the current releases, mix 32-bit and 64-bit builds, or wrap the file in a proprietary updater. A listing built around an older 8.5.x LabelWriter driver is not the same thing as DYMO Connect 1.6.2 or Label Software 8.7.4, and it carries no connection to DYMO's current compatibility matrix. The supported path runs through DYMO's own download portal.

Which DYMO Software Fits Your Operating System

Two branches cover the 4XL, and they divide cleanly by operating system.

DYMO Connect for Desktop 1.6.2 supports the LabelWriter 5 series, the 450 series and the 4XL, and it requires Windows 10 or higher, or macOS 14 or higher. It is also the branch that carries DYMO's September 2026 security fix for older releases, so it is the preferred branch wherever the OS supports it.

DYMO Label Software covers the legacy 4-series and older printers. Version 8.7.4 is listed for Windows 7 through Windows 11, and version 8.7.5 is listed for macOS 10.14 Mojave through macOS 13 Ventura.

The practical consequences:

  • On Windows 11 or 10, DYMO Connect is the current branch, while Label Software 8.7.4 remains formally available for the legacy 4-series.
  • On Windows 8.1 or 7, Label Software 8.7.4 is the only official route, because DYMO Connect requires Windows 10 at minimum.
  • On macOS 13 Ventura, Label Software 8.7.5 is the last release inside DYMO's support boundary.
  • On macOS 14, 15 or 26, DYMO Connect is the supported path, and legacy Label Software should not be carried forward.
  • On Apple Silicon, DYMO publishes an Arm64 package, DCDMac1.6.2.6-Arm64.pkg. Independent reports indicate some components in the stack can still invoke Intel/Rosetta code, so the Arm64 label should not be read as a guarantee that every binary is native.
  • On Windows on ARM, DYMO's ARM emphasis has centred on newer 5-series hardware, so native 4XL driver support on an ARM64 Windows machine should not be assumed.

If your machine is a 450-series or 550-series model rather than a 4XL, the branches and the connections differ. See the LabelWriter 450 driver guide and the LabelWriter 550 Turbo driver setup.

Windows Installation, Step by Step

  1. Confirm the Windows version before downloading anything. Windows 10 and 11 use DYMO Connect 1.6.2; Windows 7 and 8.1 are served by Label Software 8.7.4.
  2. Unplug the printer's USB cable from the computer. DYMO's installation instructions specify software first so the driver is already on disk when Windows detects the hardware.
  3. Download the installer from DYMO's support portal. The current x64 Windows file is DCDSetup1.6.2.9-X64.exe; the legacy Windows file is DLS8Setup8.7.4.exe.
  4. Run the installer and accept the Windows administrator elevation prompt.
  5. Let the software finish installing before the printer is connected.
  6. Connect the 4XL's 24 V DC, 3.75 A power adapter, then connect the USB cable directly to a port on the computer.
  7. Wait for Windows to enumerate the device and bind the DYMO driver.
  8. Open Settings, then Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners. The 4XL should be listed as a DYMO LabelWriter device.
  9. If the printer appears under Unspecified or Unknown, bind the driver manually using the procedure further down.
  10. Print a 4x6 test label from DYMO Connect or Label Software before configuring any shipping platform.

A current official package does not require disabling Windows driver-signature enforcement. If SmartScreen or another protection layer flags the file, verify first that it came from the DYMO portal rather than a mirrored copy, and re-download from DYMO instead of overriding the warning.

macOS Installation, Step by Step

  1. Match the software branch to the macOS version. macOS 14 and later take DYMO Connect 1.6.2; macOS 10.14 through 13 take Label Software 8.7.5.
  2. Select the correct Mac type on DYMO's download page. Apple Silicon machines use the Arm64 package, DCDMac1.6.2.6-Arm64.pkg; Intel Macs use the Intel package.
  3. Keep the 4XL's USB cable disconnected while the installer runs.
  4. Open the package. DYMO Connect uses a .pkg; legacy Label Software uses a .dmg.
  5. Authenticate with an administrator password or Touch ID when macOS requests installer authorization.
  6. Do not disable Gatekeeper or grant Full Disk Access as a routine step. Change privacy settings only if macOS names a specific blocked DYMO component.
  7. Power on the printer and connect USB directly to the Mac.
  8. Open System Settings, then Printers & Scanners, and confirm the LabelWriter is present. If macOS did not create the queue automatically, add the detected printer manually.
  9. Open the DYMO application and confirm it detects the printer.
  10. Print one 4x6 test label.
  11. On Apple Silicon, start with the Arm64 installer. If macOS itself reports that an Intel component needs Rosetta, follow that prompt rather than installing Rosetta in advance.

If Windows Shows the 4XL as Unspecified

When Windows detects the hardware but does not associate it with the DYMO driver, the printer appears in an unspecified device group and never reaches the printer list. DYMO documents the manual binding workflow for exactly this state.

  1. Open Control Panel, then Hardware and Sound, then Device Manager.
  2. Set View to Show hidden devices.
  3. Locate the LabelWriter entry. It typically sits under an unspecified or unknown device heading.
  4. Right-click it and choose Update driver, then Browse my computer for drivers.
  5. Point Windows at the DYMO Drivers folder that the software installed:
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\DYMO\DYMO Connect\Drivers on 64-bit Windows with DYMO Connect
    • C:\Program Files\DYMO\DYMO Connect\Drivers on 32-bit Windows with DYMO Connect
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\DYMO\DYMO Label Software\Drivers on 64-bit Windows with legacy Label Software
    • C:\Program Files\DYMO\DYMO Label Software\Drivers on 32-bit Windows with legacy Label Software
  6. Complete the wizard, reopen the DYMO application, and run a test print.

Code 43, Stuck Queues, and Disappearing Printers

Code 43 is a Windows USB device state, not a DYMO error code, and it points at the connection between computer and printer rather than at the software package. The isolation sequence that resolves most cases:

  1. Power off the 4XL and disconnect USB.
  2. Try a known-good port directly on the computer, and a known-good USB printer cable.
  3. In Device Manager, uninstall the failed or unknown LabelWriter or USB device entry.
  4. Restart or rescan for hardware.
  5. Reinstall the correct DYMO package with USB still disconnected.
  6. Reconnect only after the installation finishes, then check the printer list again.
  7. If the printer still appears as unspecified, browse to the DYMO Drivers folder manually.

If Code 43 follows the same printer and the same cable across more than one computer, shift suspicion to the cable, the power supply, the USB interface or the printer itself instead of reinstalling software a third time. A hub or docking station adds a variable while you are isolating a fault, so a direct port is the cleaner test.

Jobs that sit in the queue without printing point somewhere else:

  • Cancel pending print jobs.
  • Restart the Windows Print Spooler service.
  • Disconnect the printer, then remove the stale LabelWriter instance.
  • Remove the old LabelWriter driver through Print Server Properties.
  • Reinstall one DYMO software branch, reconnect, and test from DYMO before reintroducing a browser or platform print job.

Linux: CUPS, LPrint and Community Drivers

There is no DYMO Connect desktop edition for Linux. DYMO makes Linux and Windows driver source available through its developer resources, but that is not the same thing as a supported installer, and the practical route runs through CUPS with a community or vendor-derived LabelWriter driver.

The 4XL prints under CUPS once the media is defined explicitly. Page dimensions of 104 x 159 mm correspond to the printer's 4x6 format, and Linux users drive that with a custom page size such as PageSize=Custom.104x159mm. LPrint 1.4.0, released on June 8, 2026, fixed DYMO printer margins and corrected the label-size list for the LabelWriter 4XL, which makes it the current open-source option rather than an older CUPS tutorial. Treat Linux as community-supported: capable, but less turnkey than the Windows and macOS branches.

Prove the Driver Works Before You Configure a Platform

One test settles the majority of reports that a 4XL driver is broken: print a simple 4x6 label from DYMO's own software.

If DYMO's test label prints cleanly, the driver, the USB connection and the printer are all working, and anything wrong after that point sits in the shipping platform, the PDF, the roll or the application's paper size. If the DYMO test label fails, the fault is upstream of the platform, and the driver-binding, Code 43 and queue steps above apply.

Before testing, match the label size in three places. The source document should genuinely be 4x6, the operating system's printing preferences should be set to the matching shipping-label size, and the application should use the same format. DYMO specifically calls out misalignment from third-party software such as Shopify, Amazon and PayPal when the application's label size and the Windows printing preferences disagree.

For a file that is already 4x6, print at Actual Size or 100% and leave Fit to Page alone. Multi-page-per-sheet and tiling options should be off. The 4XL's media path tops out at approximately 4.53 in (115 mm), so shrinking a Letter-size sheet that happens to contain a 4x6 label is not a workable substitute for a native 4x6 file.

Platform workflows, and what each one actually requires:

Platform 4x6 status What to set on the 4XL
Etsy Carrier-dependent 4x6 workflow Select label-printer or 4x6 output where offered, and keep the print dialog at 4x6
eBay Native 4x6 label option Set the label format to 4x6 before purchasing or printing
Shopify Native thermal 4x6 Select Thermal 4x6, the 100 x 150 mm equivalent
Amazon FBA / Seller Central Native 4x6 thermal options for applicable shipment labels Select the thermal 4x6 format and print at 100%
ShipStation Strong native 4x6 workflow Match printer preferences to the generated document size
Pirate Ship Native 4x6 Select the 4x6 printer workflow and print at actual size
UPS WorldShip Carrier thermal 4x6 Choose the 4x6 thermal format and the 4XL driver in printer setup
FedEx Ship Manager 4x6 thermal and PDF workflows Pick 4x6 output where exposed; the exact menus vary by FedEx application edition
USPS Click-N-Ship Browser and PDF workflow Set the exact 4x6 paper size and correct scaling in the browser dialog

None of these services needs printer-specific software. They generate a label document, and the operating system with the DYMO driver prints it, so there is no Etsy 4XL driver or eBay 4XL driver to install, only a label format to select. Platform-specific walkthroughs cover the rest, such as the eBay shipping label steps.

For the test print itself, use stock the sensor already recognizes. The genuine DYMO 1744907 Extra Large Shipping Labels are 4x6 in, approximately 104 x 159 mm, direct thermal, and supplied at 220 labels per roll for the wide LabelWriter generation. Check the DYMO 1744907 on Amazon.

Compatible third-party rolls are a normal part of the 4XL ecosystem, since the printer carries no media authentication. Check the Dasher 4x6 labels on Amazon and Check the MUNBYN 4x6 labels on Amazon are two widely used rolls built to the 1744907 format. A roll made for the 4XL is not automatically recognized by a 5-series LabelWriter, which uses DYMO's label-recognition system instead. Third-party stock feeds best when backing, perforations and roll alignment match the genuine layout, and label detection problems that survive a genuine roll are rarely the driver's fault.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Hunting for a standalone 4XL driver installer. The driver arrives inside DYMO Connect or Label Software, and the software bundle is the download.
  • Connecting the USB cable before the software is installed. This is the single most common cause of an unspecified device entry.
  • Using a third-party driver updater instead of DYMO's portal, which risks an older build, the wrong architecture, or an unnecessary proprietary utility.
  • Installing legacy Label Software on macOS 14 or newer, or DYMO Connect on Windows 8.1 or 7, both of which fall outside the supported OS range.
  • Disabling driver-signature enforcement or macOS Gatekeeper, or granting Full Disk Access, as routine installation steps.
  • Treating the feed-button press-and-hold procedure as a calibration routine. On the 4XL it is a self-test, and calibration instructions written for Zebra or Rollo printers do not transfer.
  • Blaming the driver when a carrier label prints tiny, cropped or off-center. That is almost always a paper-size or scaling setting in the platform or the print dialog.
  • Assuming a USB hub is unsupported. A direct port is simply the cleaner troubleshooting test.

Conclusion

The DYMO LabelWriter 4XL driver question has a short answer. Match the software branch to the operating system, install it before the USB cable goes in, and let the printer bind the driver Windows or macOS detects. When automatic binding fails, the manual route through the installed DYMO Drivers folder resolves most cases, and Code 43 findings that follow the hardware across computers point at the cable, the power supply or the printer rather than the software.

The 4XL is discontinued, but DYMO still ships drivers for it, and third-party 4x6 stock remains widely available, so a working unit stays viable on both Windows and macOS. The current wide-format model is the LabelWriter 5XL, item 2112554, which adds USB and Ethernet/LAN plus Automatic Label Recognition over the 4XL's USB-only interface and uses DYMO's recognition-enabled media. Check the DYMO LabelWriter 5XL on Amazon. Replacement only makes sense when the old printer fails or when the 4-series consumables ecosystem no longer covers the label sizes you ship.

For the wider picture, the LabelWriter 4XL review covers the hardware itself, the DYMO shipping printer comparison sets the 4XL next to the 450 and 550 families, the 4x6 label printer buying guide covers current alternatives, and the label sizes and compatibility guide explains which stock fits which printer.
